Introducing the 8849 Tank X: rugged phone with projector

The company 8849 has unveiled an unusual rugged smartphone, the Tank X, which stands out not only for its massive battery and reinforced body but also for its built-in Full HD projector. The new device is already available for pre-order, with the first deliveries expected in early February. Positioned as a versatile gadget for travel, camping, and off-site work, its feature set is so packed that it feels more like a portable multi-tool than a standard smartphone.

The standout feature is the integrated DLP projector with 1920×1080 resolution and brightness around 220 lumens. It supports keystone correction and laser autofocus at distances up to four meters, allowing for quick image projection without lengthy setup. While this projector won't replace a TV, it could prove handy for hiking trips or impromptu presentations in the field.

Inside, the Tank X packs a MediaTek Dimensity 8200 processor, paired with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. The phone sports a large 6.78-inch display with a 120 Hz refresh rate and runs Android 15. However, the real showstopper is the 17,600 mAh battery, which supports 120 W fast charging and can fully recharge in about 70 minutes. The manufacturer promises up to three and a half days of use. There's also 10 W reverse charging capability.

The camera setup includes a 50 MP main sensor, an 8 MP telephoto lens, and a 65 MP night camera with infrared illumination for shooting in complete darkness. Up front, there's a 50-megapixel selfie camera. Additionally, the phone features a powerful camping flashlight rated at 1,200 lumens, underscoring its focus on extreme conditions.

Of course, all these capabilities come at the cost of bulk: the Tank X weighs around 750 grams and measures over 31 mm thick, making it more of a hefty gadget than a pocket-friendly phone. The smartphone is IP68-rated for protection and is priced at $1049 on the 8849 website.
