Apple's iPhone Flip: a potential compact foldable phone

Apple is exploring the possibility of releasing a flip-style iPhone. According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the company is looking at a compact foldable smartphone with a square design. When folded, it would resemble a classic flip phone and focus on maximum portability. Referred to unofficially as the iPhone Flip, such a device could compete with models like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 and the current Motorola Razr if launched. However, this name is not official, and the project itself remains in the discussion phase.

Sources indicate Apple is primarily focused on launching a different foldable iPhone first—one with a Fold form factor. This smartphone is expected to debut in the autumn and feature a large internal display of around 7.7 inches, designed for multimedia and multitasking. Only after that might the company revisit the idea of a more compact foldable device.

The flip form factor is being considered as an alternative for users who prioritize wearability and compact size over maximum screen area. Apple anticipates that the success of its first foldable iPhone could establish sustained demand for devices of various shapes and sizes, similar to the evolution of the classic iPhone lineup.

Gurman stated that Apple is counting on its first foldable iPhone being successful enough to create genuine demand for the category, with buyers then wanting more models in different shapes and sizes, as happened with traditional flat iPhones. Nevertheless, he noted that the arrival of a flip-style iPhone is far from guaranteed.
