Nintendo Switch 2 sells 17.37 million units, boosts company revenue

Nintendo has released its third-quarter results, confirming an impressive start for the new Nintendo Switch 2 console. According to the company, the device sold 17.37 million units by December 31, 2025, making it one of the most successful launches in the brand's history. Sales of the Switch 2 began on June 5, 2025, and the console set records in its first months.

In the last quarter of 2025 alone, Nintendo sold an additional 7.01 million units, bringing the total from 10.36 million to 17.37 million. Even accounting for the holiday season, these are extremely high figures, and the company's forecast of 19 million by the end of the fiscal year now seems not only achievable but easily surpassable. If this momentum holds, the Switch 2 could well exceed 20 million units by March.

Meanwhile, the original Nintendo Switch, despite being nine years old, continues to sell strongly. Another 3.25 million consoles were shipped in the quarter, allowing the first Switch to surpass 155 million in total sales. This officially makes it Nintendo's most successful console ever, overtaking the Nintendo DS with its 154 million units.

Game sales for the Switch 2 are also showing robust demand. The launch hit Mario Kart World has already reached 14.03 million copies, including console bundles, while Donkey Kong: Bananza sold 4.25 million and Kirby Air Riders sold 1.76 million. This confirms that the new platform is quickly building its own library of bestsellers.

The only downturn in the quarter was a 10.1% drop in intellectual property revenue, due to lower movie earnings. However, Nintendo expects to offset this with the release of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on April 1. Financially, the Switch 2 launch has already become a powerful growth driver: the company's net sales nearly doubled to $12.25 billion, operating profit rose to $1.93 billion, and overall profit increased by more than 51%.
