Apple has stopped signing iOS 26.2, which means users who have updated their iPhones to iOS 26.2.1 can no longer downgrade. Previously, it was possible to revert to the older version using macOS Finder on a Mac or the Apple Devices app on Windows, provided the update was still being signed. That option is now gone, as Apple has ceased signing the software, making earlier iOS versions unsupported.
Firmware signing confirms verification by Apple's servers during installation. If the software isn't signed, installation is blocked. This is standard practice for the company, as stopping support for outdated versions helps protect devices from running less secure software.
In addition to iOS 26.2, Apple has also ended support for older iOS versions on devices that cannot update to iOS 26. This includes iOS 12.5.7, iOS 15.8.5, iOS 16.7.12, and iOS 18.7.3. Last week saw the release of iOS 12.5.8, iOS 15.8.6, and iOS 18.7.4.
For iPhone users who have installed iOS 26.2.1 with AirTags 2 support, it's important to note that rolling back to version 26.2 is not an option. This serves as another reminder that Apple maintains strict control over software installation on its devices to ensure system security and stability.
