AMD hints at next-gen Xbox launch in 2027 with new gaming projects

AMD has effectively hinted that the next-generation Xbox could launch as early as 2027. CEO Lisa Su stated this during the company's latest investor earnings call, noting that development of Microsoft's new console based on a semi-custom AMD chip is progressing well and is expected to culminate in a console launch in 2027. This appears to be a target Microsoft itself is currently considering.

Su also confirmed that Valve plans to begin shipping its Steam Machine console early this year. As a result, AMD is simultaneously involved in several major next-generation gaming projects, reinforcing its role as a key supplier of processors and graphics for the console industry.

The partnership between Microsoft and AMD was officially announced back in the summer of 2025. At that time, Xbox president Sarah Bond emphasized the company's intent to actively integrate artificial intelligence and machine learning into future games and platforms. She also mentioned joint chip development for various device formats, including both home consoles and portable models, which fuels rumors of an upcoming Xbox handheld.

Earlier leaks from the FTC lawsuit against Microsoft revealed that the company was exploring a hybrid gaming platform concept that combines local hardware with cloud computing. The documents also mentioned a tentative release date of 2028. Now, the AMD CEO's comments suggest Microsoft might accelerate its plans and launch the new Xbox sooner, particularly as the Xbox Series X and S, released in 2020, are selling weaker than the previous Xbox One generation.
