Telegram has rolled out a major update to its Android app, bringing it to version 12.4 with a significant visual overhaul. The most notable change is the replacement of the side menu with a bottom navigation bar, bringing the app's look closer to its iOS counterpart. This move has become the most talked-about aspect of the update.
The interface now feels noticeably softer, with rounded elements, smoother animations, and a "liquid glass" effect that adds depth and volume to the screen. Telegram is clearly betting on visual dynamism and modern styling, even if it means asking Android users to adjust their habits.
Among the functional additions is a rare gifts system. Users can combine up to four items from the same collection in an attempt to get a more valuable variant. However, this experiment comes with risk—if unsuccessful, all used items are permanently lost, turning the process into a sort of digital lottery.
Developers have also brought back the file attachment button directly in the chat window, simplifying the sending of documents and media. For group calls, there's now an option to join with the microphone muted by default, a useful tweak for larger conferences. Security gets attention too, with enhanced proxy connection mechanisms that improve the messenger's stability and protection.
User reaction has been mixed. Some have praised the fresh design and new features, while others find the changes unnecessary and complain about losing familiar navigation logic.
