ASUS and Microsoft have officially opened preorders for the new ROG Xbox Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally handheld gaming consoles. Built by ASUS and promoted by Microsoft as official Xbox-branded handhelds, the devices are slated to reach retail in October. The Ally X is priced at $999, while the base ROG Xbox Ally starts at $599.
The flagship ROG Xbox Ally X features a 7-inch 120 Hz 1080p display, a 70 or 80 Wh battery, 24 GB of LPDDR5X-8000 RAM, a 1 TB SSD, and AMD’s latest Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor. Based on the Zen 5 architecture, the chip offers 8 cores and 16 threads, boost clocks up to 5 GHz, a 15–35 W TDP range, and RDNA 3.5 graphics with 16 compute units. It is paired with an XDNA 2 NPU delivering 50 TOPS for AI workloads.
The standard ROG Xbox Ally keeps the same 7-inch IPS screen but steps down to an AMD Ryzen Z2A built on Zen 2 with 4 cores and 8 threads, boost up to 3.8 GHz, and integrated RDNA 2 graphics with 8 compute units. It comes with 16 GB of LPDDR5-6400 memory, a replaceable 512 GB SSD, and a 60 Wh battery. Unlike the higher-end model, it lacks an NPU and targets buyers who value a lower entry price over peak performance.
The divide in capabilities shows up clearly at the checkout: the gap is $400. Analysts note the entry model would be even more compelling at around $500, while Ally X makes a convincing case for its premium status. Against the backdrop of shifting global tariffs, they also warn that prices may change later, making a preorder right now look like the most cost-effective move.
