Next Xbox to run full Windows, launching Steam and Epic Games

The next Xbox console is set to be a true breakthrough. According to insider Jez Corden from Windows Central, the new system will run on a full version of Windows. This means users will be able to launch not only games from the Microsoft store but also third-party platforms like Steam and Epic Games Store. The console combines a TV-friendly interface with the capabilities of a standard PC, opening up entirely new use cases.

Microsoft plans to release "super-premium" versions, while third-party manufacturers are preparing more affordable models that could even surpass the original console in power. Preliminary data suggests the base next-generation Xbox might cost around $1000, but memory and component shortages until 2028 could drive the price even higher.

Technical specifications look impressive

The system features a single-chip Magnus design with eleven cores, a GPU based on RDNA 6 with 68 compute units, up to 48 GB of GDDR7 memory, and a dedicated neural chip for AI functions. Support for 3D V-Cache is also not ruled out. This could mark the first step toward a fully open and flexible gaming console ecosystem, where PC and console merge into one.
