New Mac battery charge limit feature to extend battery lifespan

Apple has introduced a battery charge limit feature for Mac computers in the first beta of macOS 26.4. Previously available only on iPhones and iPads, this tool is designed to extend battery lifespan. Mac users can now manually set a charging ceiling between 80% and 100%, allowing them to balance battery longevity with daily usage needs.

Once enabled, the system stops charging the device as it approaches the set limit, reducing strain on the battery during prolonged use while plugged in. Apple notes that the Mac will still occasionally charge to 100% to maintain accurate battery level reporting and proper calibration. Users can activate the feature in System Settings under Battery, where they'll find additional charging options.

macOS 26.4 and iOS 26.4 also include a new command in the Shortcuts app for automating charge limit management. This allows users to create scenarios where the limit activates or adjusts automatically—for instance, during work hours or when connected to specific networks. This integration makes the feature particularly useful for those who frequently use their laptops at a desk and rarely drain the battery completely.

For MacBook owners who keep their devices plugged in for extended periods, this battery charge limitation could prove valuable. In such conditions, batteries degrade faster, and this new function helps slow that process without compromising everyday usability.
