Apple CarPlay Video feature moves closer with iOS beta

Apple is continuing to expand the capabilities of its CarPlay automotive system, and the first beta of iOS 26.4 makes it clear that the launch of CarPlay Video has moved significantly closer. Following its announcement at WWDC 2025, where Apple officially stated its intention to allow video viewing in cars via AirPlay when the vehicle is fully stopped, specific technical groundwork for this feature has begun appearing in the system.

Earlier mentions of video playback in CarPlay were found in documentation for developers and automakers. It explicitly stated that the function would require AirPlay support on the automotive system's side. This is necessary for strict control over usage conditions and to block playback while the vehicle is in motion. This approach is designed to prevent driver distraction and comply with safety requirements.

The iOS 26.4 beta introduces new interface elements and system processes related to video in CarPlay. These include initial setup screens, notifications, and logic for interacting with multimedia apps. Of particular interest is the integration with Apple TV. Code analysis has revealed notifications suggesting users subscribe on their iPhone to access content when they are not driving. This indirectly confirms the service will be one of the key platforms for launching CarPlay Video.

However, Apple traditionally does not guarantee that features found in early beta builds will appear in the public release. The company often refines or temporarily removes capabilities discovered in these versions. Another factor remains the readiness of automakers. Without their support for AirPlay video, the feature cannot function in CarPlay. Therefore, its rollout may take time and depend on specific car brands and models.
