Apple's macOS 26.3 code reveals new MacBook and monitor identifiers

References to several unannounced Apple devices have been discovered in the code of macOS 26.3. According to Macworld, the latest public version of the system's kernel extensions contain three product identifiers: J700, J427, and J527. This discovery comes just ahead of Apple's scheduled March 4th event, fueling speculation about potential announcements.

Insider sources suggest the J700 identifier points to a budget MacBook featuring an A18 Pro chip. This model is expected to be a compact laptop with a screen under 13 inches, housed in an aluminum chassis and available in multiple colors. Earlier reports indicated it could serve as a more affordable alternative to the MacBook Air lineup.

The J427 and J527 codes have drawn particular attention, as they are believed to be linked to new external monitors. This could involve the next generation of the Studio Display or a replacement for the Pro Display XDR, which hasn't been updated since 2019. One theory suggests Apple is testing two variants and will select one for release, while another posits the company is preparing two distinct models with differences in screen size or specifications.

Currently, the Studio Display from 2022 and the Pro Display XDR from 2019 remain on sale. The appearance of these new identifiers in macOS 26.3 indicates that development is underway for at least one, and possibly two, new displays. More details could emerge in early March when Apple unveils its new products.
