The new product is expected to enter the smart speaker segment and compete with offerings like Amazon Echo and Google Home. A key feature will be a built-in camera designed for recognizing faces and objects in a room. The speaker will be able to analyze the environment, consider context, and offer user recommendations. The system is anticipated to respond not just to commands but also to life scenarios—for instance, reminding someone about sleep habits before an important day. The hardware direction at OpenAI is led by Jony Ive, the legendary designer previously responsible for Apple products. After acquiring his studio, io Products, the company has significantly expanded its team, underscoring serious intentions in this new segment.
However, the project already raises privacy concerns. Constantly active cameras and microphones require transparent data-handling policies.
