id Software is actively working on a story expansion for DOOM: The Dark Ages, and according to project director Hugo Martin, the scale of the DLC will far exceed player expectations. During an official Slayers Club Live broadcast, Martin stated that the expansion essentially feels like a sequel and called it truly massive.
Martin explained that the DLC will feature a large structure with Metroidvania-like elements. Players will need to revisit previously explored locations, unlocking previously inaccessible areas using new tools and abilities. The game will include a central hub, numerous secrets, and so-called "endgame content" that becomes available after completing the main storyline. The developers are betting on a high skill threshold for gamers—mastering some mechanics will take time but will ultimately significantly alter the gameplay.
Special attention is being paid to storytelling. While DOOM is traditionally associated primarily with dynamic action, the team continues to expand the series' universe. In the new DLC, the focus will be on the "show, don't tell" principle: narrative will be integrated into the environment and gameplay rather than delivered through lengthy cutscenes. The developers aim to make the story part of the overall experience rather than a separate element.
It has also been confirmed that the expansion will include a weapon quick-switch function, though it won't be available immediately—players will have to "earn the right" to use it. An exact release date hasn't been announced yet, but details are expected in the coming months. The original DOOM: The Dark Ages received high praise from critics and became the largest launch in the series' history.
