Android 17 beta bug breaks Okay, Google voice command on Pixel phones

Pixel smartphone owners are facing an unexpected issue with the Android 17 beta release: the "Okay, Google" voice command no longer triggers the Gemini assistant dialog box. This bug affects both Android 17 Beta 1 and Beta 2 across various models, including the Pixel 6 Pro.

The problem is straightforward but extremely frustrating. Despite having the correct settings enabled, phones simply stop responding to the wake words. After saying "Okay, Google," the system should launch either Gemini or the classic Google Assistant, but in the current Android 17 betas, this fails to happen. For many users who rely heavily on voice control, this effectively removes a core smartphone function.

Complaints quickly surfaced on Reddit, where Pixel owners confirmed the issue is widespread. Some tried clearing the cache and data for Gemini or Google Assistant, but in most cases, this didn't help. Google has already received bug reports through its official tracker, so there's hope a fix will arrive in one of the next beta builds.

A temporary workaround does exist. Users can manually launch Gemini by holding the power button on the right side of the phone. The command "Okay, Google, let's chat" also works, activating Gemini Live mode. However, this is more of a workaround than a proper replacement for the usual hands-free voice activation.

This situation feels particularly symbolic given Google's active transition from the classic Assistant to Gemini. The company has already started removing the option to revert to the old assistant on new Pixel models, leaving it only as a "Legacy Assistant" for older devices. Therefore, the Android 17 Beta bug is seen by users as a concerning signal—especially amid expectations that Gemini will become the central element of Google's ecosystem.

It's worth noting that this bug isn't limited to the Android 17 beta. Some Pixel users with Android 16 and the latest update have also lost the voice command functionality for activating their assistant.
