Google has begun rolling out Android Auto 16.3 globally. The beta version first appeared in mid-February, and now the stable build is gradually becoming available to all users via Google Play. The update is being distributed in stages, so automatic installation may take several weeks depending on region and device.
Users who prefer not to wait can install the new version manually by downloading the APK file and running the installation themselves. This may require permission to install apps from unknown sources, which is relevant for those eager to get the update sooner or hoping it fixes potential system bugs.
Android Auto 16.3 doesn't bring any noticeable visual changes. However, behind the scenes, the system is being prepared for more significant updates. Code in recent builds includes references to integrating FM radio and climate control directly into the Android Auto interface. This could be a major step forward for vehicles where key functions like air conditioning are only accessible through the multimedia screen.
If Google's plans come to fruition, drivers will be able to adjust cabin temperature and switch radio stations without leaving the Android Auto interface. This would eliminate the need to constantly switch between the car's native system and the app. No timeline has been announced for these features, but version 16.3 lays the technical groundwork for their eventual launch.
