Foldable smartphones are already engineering puzzles in their own right, but what happens when you try to nearly double their battery capacity? That's exactly the experiment YouTuber Scotty Allen from the Strange Parts channel conducted. His goal was to see what would happen if he replaced the standard battery in a Galaxy Z TriFold with a higher-density silicon-carbon cell from a competing device.
The original Galaxy Z TriFold comes with a triple-cell battery rated at 5,600 mAh, while its closest competitor, the Honor Magic V6, boasts a battery around 6,660 mAh. Allen decided to use Honor's high-density batteries and install them in the Samsung chassis, but the task proved far more challenging in practice.
The batteries were slightly larger than the available space, requiring physical modifications to the case: milling parts on a machine, sanding down hinges, and removing the bottom speaker. Additionally, to get the batteries working properly, he had to replace Honor's power management system with Samsung's original one.
The result was a Galaxy Z TriFold with a 9,600 mAh battery—a 71% increase over the original. The phone does function, though a noticeable white line has appeared on the display, likely due to deformation during disassembly and reassembly.
This experiment demonstrates that significantly boosting battery capacity while maintaining physical dimensions is possible, paving the way for more autonomous foldable smartphones. Samsung remains cautious with such technologies, prioritizing reliability, but rumors about the adoption of silicon-carbon batteries in future models, including the Galaxy S26 Edge, suggest the company is exploring these possibilities.
