Apple may be preparing a second generation of its affordable Apple MacBook Neo laptop. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the future model, tentatively called MacBook Neo 2, will receive several important updates aimed at addressing the main shortcomings of the first version.
The original MacBook Neo is considered Apple's most affordable laptop, with a starting price around $599. It stands out with its aluminum body, bright display with up to 500 nits of brightness, and a large multi-touch trackpad. However, limited RAM and a mobile chip were the model's main compromises.
The new generation is expected to switch to the more powerful Apple A19 Pro processor, which is rumored to be used in the iPhone 17 Pro. The device may also get 12 GB of RAM, an increase of roughly 50% compared to the current model.
A touchscreen is set to be another notable addition. The touch layer is expected to be integrated directly into the IPS panel, meaning the laptop's body won't become thicker. Developers might also prepare a special version of macOS optimized for touch control.
Rumors suggest the first Apple laptop with a touch display could be the upcoming MacBook Ultra, expected later this year. By the time the second-generation MacBook Neo launches, the software platform may already be adapted for such screens.
With at least a year remaining until the possible release, Apple's plans could still change, so this information should be treated as preliminary.
