OLED display market potential in IT devices and challenges

According to research by South Korean firm UBI Research, OLED display penetration in the tablet, laptop, and monitor markets remains extremely low at just 5.9%, 4.4%, and 2.0%, respectively. For comparison, OLED holds over half of the smartphone market at 52.9%.

Experts point out that the medium-sized OLED panel segment has significant growth potential. However, the technology is still in its early stages and has a path to travel before achieving mass adoption. This is particularly true for laptops, where OLED can cost 80–150% more than LCD in the premium market and 20–50% more in the mass market segment.

To increase OLED's market share, costs must come down. A shift from G6 to G8.6 production lines could reduce costs by 32%. Additional savings are expected from single-layer OLED displays, improved materials for RGB emission, and replacing polarizers with color filters (COE).

Overall, the OLED industry in the IT segment is poised for growth. But turning potential demand into real market dominance will require technological improvements and production optimization.
