Vivo files patent for smartphone with vertical sliding display

Vivo has filed a patent application for an unusual smartphone with a sliding display. Unlike previously shown concepts where the screen expands in width, the Vivo device features a vertical construction—the display becomes longer, not wider. According to published images from the patent documentation, the screen unfolds upward, increasing the device's height. This allows the smartphone to transform from a standard form factor into a more elongated version with an expanded vertical workspace.

This approach seems unusual because modern applications are already optimized for tall displays with aspect ratios of 20:9 and higher. It remains unclear what practical use cases the additional screen height might offer—perhaps it could enable more convenient work with documents, social media, or multitasking.
