Yamaha unveils 2026 Tricity 300 with built-in airbag

Yamaha has officially unveiled the 2026 Tricity 300, which becomes the world's first production scooter with a built-in airbag. This launch marks a significant advancement in motorcycle safety technology, an area that has traditionally lagged behind the automotive industry.

The system was developed in partnership with Swedish supplier Autoliv. Unlike earlier solutions used on conventional motorcycles, this new technology is not simply an adaptation of a car airbag. At its core is a G-sensor that monitors deceleration in real time. When frontal collision parameters are confirmed, the airbag deploys instantly from beneath the handlebars. The system can distinguish an actual head-on crash from skidding, hard braking, or a stationary drop, preventing false activations.

This development responds to accident statistics. According to Honda research, up to 68% of serious motorcycle accidents involve frontal collisions. Autoliv testing showed that in an impact at around 50 km/h, head injury criteria (HIC) without an airbag reached 6794, while with the system activated it dropped to 118—well below the dangerous threshold of 500.

Beyond the innovative safety system, the Tricity 300 remains a full-fledged urban scooter. The model weighs approximately 242 kg and is equipped with a 292cc single-cylinder Blue Core engine producing 27.6 horsepower. The powertrain pairs with a CVT and belt drive, delivering comfortable and easy-to-handle riding.
