Samsung developing new foldable smartphone with wider screen design

Samsung is reportedly working on a new foldable smartphone with a wider screen, a departure from the familiar Galaxy Z Fold series design. This information comes from well-known insider Digital Chat Station.

According to the leak, the device could feature the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. This chip would deliver performance on par with upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8 models.

The smartphone is said to be equipped with a two-section battery with a total capacity of around 4,800 mAh. One part of the battery might have a capacity of 2,267 mAh, while the other could be 2,393 mAh. This dual-battery setup is common in foldable devices, allowing for balanced weight distribution and more efficient use of internal space.

The internal display is rumored to measure 7.6 inches—the same size used in recent Fold generations. However, the key difference could be the aspect ratio. The new device might adopt a wider, near 4:3 format, giving it a small tablet-like feel when unfolded.

A wider external screen is expected to make typing and daily use easier, while the internal display should be more comfortable for reading, watching videos, and browsing the web.

Sources suggest Samsung might launch the device first in its home market of South Korea. Further evidence of development comes from a One UI 9 build that shows signs of support for a new foldable form factor.

In practice, this means Samsung isn't likely to replace the existing Galaxy Z Fold lineup but instead offer an alternative foldable option. This would give users a choice between the traditional tall Fold format and a wider variant with tablet-like proportions.
