The global shortage of memory components is starting to significantly impact the gaming industry. According to discussions at the Game Developers Conference 2026 in San Francisco, the memory deficit is already affecting game development, console pricing, and the release schedules of new hardware. While artificial intelligence was the official main focus of the event, many developers in the corridors were talking specifically about the component supply issue. As Polygon notes, the memory situation could remain tight for at least several more years.
Experts warn that the component shortage could delay the launch of new gaming systems and increase their cost. Preliminary estimates suggest the next PlayStation 6 console may not be unveiled before 2029.
Microsoft is also preparing a new generation of devices. Developers might receive an early version of the console, codenamed Xbox Project Helix, as soon as 2027. However, analysts speculate the device's price could exceed $1000, potentially slowing audience growth and game sales.
Against this backdrop, calls are growing within the industry to focus less on increasing graphical power and more on project optimization. This primarily means reducing demands on RAM.
One example is the project Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, whose developers recently lowered the recommended RAM requirement from 32 GB to 16 GB. Some specialists view this trend positively: they believe the graphical improvements in modern games are becoming less noticeable, and that better optimization will help expand the audience, especially on devices with less powerful hardware.
