A teardown of the iPhone 17e reveals how Apple has simplified adding MagSafe charging to the budget iPhone 16e. Externally, the devices are nearly identical, with key updates focusing on the refreshed chipset and integrated MagSafe coil. An iFixit video shows that, with the right tools, installing the new module on the older model takes just minutes.
The main difference between the iPhone 17e and iPhone 16e lies in the wireless charging coil. Apple provided repair instructions from day one, and the 4,005 mAh battery is easily removable thanks to electrolytically detachable adhesive. This simplifies battery replacement and reduces the risk of damaging the casing.
Despite the easier teardown, accessing the USB-C port remains a complex procedure. The port often fails due to wear, and iFixit notes that replacement requires careful handling. Apple optimized this process in the iPhone 16, but such improvements were not applied to the iPhone 17e, which remains a weak point in the design.
Testing MagSafe compatibility between the iPhone 17e and iPhone 16e showed that the adapter physically fits, but software support is lacking. The charging animation doesn't activate, and Face ID will stop working due to differences in the TrueDepth cameras. The charging power for the older device remains an open question that will require further testing.
Overall, iFixit gave the iPhone 17e a repairability score of 7 out of 10. The company is gradually making its devices more repair-friendly, but the latest changes appear more tied to manufacturing efficiency and cost reduction than enhancing the user experience.
