The storage market has just seen the launch of one of the most expensive SSDs in history. The Exascend PE4, with a massive 16TB capacity, has finally reached general availability a year after its initial announcement. However, its price tag is comparable to that of a used car—around $16,000—making it an extremely niche product.
This drive comes in the M.2 form factor and uses the PCIe Gen4 NVMe interface. According to the manufacturer, it offers read speeds of up to 3,270 MB/s and write speeds of up to 2,980 MB/s, placing it among high-performance solutions. Yet the key feature isn't speed but its record-breaking capacity: 16 terabytes in a compact form factor.
While it may attract enthusiasts, the primary applications for such an SSD remain corporate and professional workloads. Think servers, data storage systems, AI infrastructure, and big data processing—areas where high storage density and 24/7 reliability are crucial. For the average user, this solution is overkill in both price and capability.
It's also worth noting the drive's reliability. The manufacturer claims a mean time between failures of up to two million hours, with power consumption staying relatively low for this class—under 7.2W. Still, the high cost and limited availability underscore that such drives remain a product for a narrow circle of professionals.
