Samsung appears undeterred from experimenting with unconventional smartphone form factors, despite the swift decline in sales of its first tri-fold device. The Galaxy Z TriFold, introduced as an expensive technological experiment, is gradually disappearing from the market just months after its launch.
While the device never became a mainstream product, it captured audience attention and even sold out in limited batches. According to insider reports, the company is already developing its successor—the Galaxy Z TriFold 2. The main focus is a hinge redesign, which should make the device thinner and lighter, addressing a key issue with the first version.
The new tri-fold is expected to approach the thickness of standard foldable smartphones, though it won't fully shed its bulk due to its complex construction. A tentative launch window is likely set for mid-2027, giving Samsung time to refine reliability and reduce the visibility of screen creases.
Simultaneously, the company is testing another format—a smartphone with a slide-out display. Unlike motorized concept devices, this involves a manual mechanism that expands the screen to roughly 7 inches. This all indicates that Samsung continues to explore new shapes for mobile devices, even if initial attempts remain niche.
