A controversy is swirling around Samsung’s mobile division: prominent leaker Ice Universe has launched a petition demanding a shake-up of the team responsible for smartphone cameras. The Change.org document has already gathered more than 4,000 signatures, stirring debate across the community and putting pressure on the South Korean giant’s reputation.
According to the insider, Samsung’s claims that its smartphone cameras stay ahead of the competition do not match reality. The petition lists eight core issues: stagnation in sensor development; outdated ISOCELL HP2 and IMX754 modules; poor night and portrait performance; HDR errors; over-sharpened video; and shutter lag. Users also complain about a yellow-black skin-processing effect that leaves photos looking unnatural.
It also argues that the company ignores feedback and copies Apple rather than bringing its own ideas to the table. Algorithmic tuning is said to be improving too slowly, while advanced AI methods—such as Google’s HDR+ or Huawei’s XMAGE—remain underused. At the same time, the petition’s author stresses, Samsung supplies more modern sensors to Chinese brands, while its own flagships are held back by a conservative approach.
Taken together, the insider’s critique and the surge of user support point to growing frustration with flagship camera quality. If leadership fails to act, the fallout could dent Samsung’s image at a moment when rivals are investing heavily in mobile photography. The tone of the petition leaves little doubt: the audience expects bolder progress than they are seeing today.
