Nintendo reduces Switch 2 production by 30% amid weak sales

Nintendo has cut production of its hybrid Switch 2 console by more than 30% this quarter. The company initially planned to manufacture 6 million units, but after weak holiday sales, particularly in the US, that target has been revised down to 4 million.

Despite the production cut, Nintendo still aims to sell 20 million consoles by the end of the fiscal year. As of December 31, 2025, the Switch 2 had already sold 17.3 million units, significantly outpacing its predecessor.

The company is waiting for demand to recover with the release of new games before ramping up production again. One such title is Pokémon Pokopia, which has received glowing reviews and high critic scores. It sold 2.2 million copies in its first four days and holds a Metacritic average of 90/100.

Pokémon Pokopia is not only considered the best spin-off in the series but has also surpassed many recent releases in spirit and gameplay depth, capturing the charm of classic franchise entries. Nintendo expert Nathan Birch gave it a 9 out of 10, confirming its quality and popularity among fans. The next major exclusive for the Switch 2 will be Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, scheduled for release on May 21, 2026. This launch could influence demand and Nintendo's decision to further increase console production.
