Xiaomi ends MIUI support, moves to HyperOS for better integration

Xiaomi has officially ended the era of its signature MIUI interface, the software that fueled its rise to prominence and became one of Android's most popular custom skins. At its peak, MIUI boasted over 500 million monthly active users across a vast array of devices from Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO brands.

Even into 2026, certain models like the Redmi A2 and Redmi A2+ continued receiving updates—primarily security patches and minor improvements. The final firmware update rolled out in December, but official support for these devices ended on March 24, 2026. No MIUI-based device will receive further updates, marking the definitive close of this chapter in the company's history.

MIUI began as a custom ROM back in 2010, well before Xiaomi's first smartphones launched. It quickly gained traction thanks to regular updates, extensive customization options, and support for devices from various manufacturers. Features such as "Second Space," "Dual Apps," and a flexible theme system made MIUI one of the most recognizable interfaces of its time.

As MIUI's popularity grew, Xiaomi entered the smartphone market and rapidly expanded its user base. By 2015, the system had reached 100 million users, and by 2021, that number exceeded 500 million. At one point, MIUI was running on roughly 15% of all Xiaomi devices, becoming a cornerstone of its ecosystem.

However, the company eventually faced scaling challenges. Its diverse portfolio—spanning smartphones, smart home devices, and even cars—demanded a unified platform. This led Xiaomi to transition to HyperOS, a new system that blends Android with the company's proprietary technologies to create a cohesive ecosystem.

HyperOS serves as a natural evolution of MIUI, delivering higher performance, improved stability, and deeper device integration. The new system underpins Xiaomi's "Human-Car-Home" strategy, enabling seamless connectivity between smartphones, smart devices, and vehicles. For users, the interface retains many familiar MIUI elements, ensuring a smooth transition.
