A new player has entered the minimalist device market: the Meadow 1 smartphone, positioned as a gadget for “digital detox.” The device bets on abandoning the familiar functions of modern smartphones, offering users a maximally simplified experience without social networks, browsers, or other distracting services.
The main feature of this novelty is its extremely compact format. The smartphone sports a square 3-inch LCD display, making it significantly smaller than even compact models like the iPhone mini. Externally, it resembles old experimental phones from the early 2010s, yet it retains modern basic capabilities.
Meadow 1 supports a limited set of applications, including Spotify, Apple Music, maps, Uber, Strava, notes, and weather. Meanwhile, access to contacts is also restricted—users can add no more than 12 people, and only they can call or send messages. An interesting feature is its interaction with the primary smartphone: calls first go to it and are only forwarded to the Meadow if there’s no answer.
However, the main controversial aspect of the device is its business model. Beyond the price of $449 without a discount, owners must pay $10 per month for access to basic functions—calls, messages, and data storage. The first nine months are included in the cost, but then the subscription becomes mandatory.
From a technical standpoint, the device offers 6 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage, support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC, as well as a 13-megapixel camera and up to two days of battery life. At the same time, the manufacturer has not disclosed details about the processor or battery capacity, which only reinforces the sense of this device’s niche appeal.
