Chinese company SmartSens has unveiled its new flagship smartphone sensor, the SC5A6XS, which could intensify competition in the mobile photography market. The sensor features a 1-inch format and 50 MP resolution, with a key focus on expanded dynamic range and advanced video capabilities.
Built using 22nm stacked technology, the sensor incorporates an upgraded Lofic HDR 3.0 system. This system achieves a dynamic range of up to 115 dB, allowing it to preserve detail in both bright and dark areas of a frame simultaneously. It uses multi-frame merging within a single exposure, which reduces motion artifacts—a particularly important feature for video recording.
The SC5A6XS supports 4K video recording at 120 frames per second, as well as 4K 60fps in HDR mode. These specs position it not just for photography, but also for professional video in smartphones. Additionally, the sensor features 1.6 µm pixels and proprietary SFCPixel technology, which enhances light sensitivity and reduces noise in low-light shooting.
Autofocus is handled by a combination of AllPix ADAF with full coverage and phase detection, which should deliver fast and accurate focusing in any conditions. The manufacturer also claims an approximately 11% reduction in power consumption in HDR mode, which could positively impact device heating during extended recording sessions.
The sensor has already entered the testing phase and is expected to enter mass production in the second quarter of 2026. The first smartphones featuring the new module could appear in upcoming flagship models, where the emphasis will be squarely on imaging quality.
