Sony has announced a significant global price increase for the PlayStation 5 consoles, effective April 2, 2026. All models will see a rise of at least $100, with the flagship PS5 Pro jumping by $150.
In the U.S., the standard PS5 will now cost $649.99, up from $549.99, while the digital edition increases to $599.99. The PS5 Pro will reach $899.99. Similar hikes will affect Europe, the U.K., and Japan, where prices will also climb substantially. For example, in Europe, the base model will be priced at 649.99 euros, and the Pro version at 899.99 euros.
The company cites a challenging macroeconomic environment, including rising component costs and supply chain pressures, as the reason for the move. Since its launch in 2020, the digital PS5 has already gone up by $200 in total, making this console generation one of the most expensive in the brand's history.
This price surge is largely tied to a sharp increase in memory costs, with DRAM prices soaring over 170% in the past year. This directly impacts device production costs and forces manufacturers to adjust their pricing strategies.
As a result, Sony is following an industry trend where gaming consoles no longer become cheaper over time but instead grow more expensive. For players, this means entering the PlayStation ecosystem is becoming notably more costly, especially given already high prices for games and accessories.
