According to leaks, Microsoft is preparing a significant update to its Xbox Game Pass subscription service. Code from the latest update reveals a new pricing tier with the codename Triton, which could change the company's approach to game distribution.
The main difference with this new tier is its content. Unlike the standard Game Pass, which features titles from both internal studios and third-party developers, Triton will include exclusively games from Xbox Game Studios. Titles already spotted include DOOM Eternal, Dishonored 2, Fable Anniversary, Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, Gears 5, Halo 5, Halo Wars 2, Hellblade, Ori and State of Decay 2, as well as The Elder Scrolls Online.
This approach could be a strategic move for Microsoft. By avoiding third-party licenses, the company could significantly reduce costs and offer users a more affordable subscription. Rumors suggest the new tier might be either free with ads or substantially cheaper than current options. This also aligns with Microsoft's strategy of maximizing the use of its own studios, which have been actively acquired in recent years.
Another interesting aspect is the potential for integration with other services. Earlier discussions mentioned a possible partnership between Xbox and Netflix, and this new tier could serve as a foundation for such combined subscriptions. In that case, Game Pass could evolve beyond just a gaming service into part of a broader digital entertainment ecosystem.
While there's been no official announcement yet, Triton's appearance in the code suggests a launch could happen soon. If the rumors prove true, Microsoft could significantly expand Game Pass's audience through this more accessible entry point.
