MediaTek Dimensity 9600 chipset with dual-core architecture and 2nm process

MediaTek is planning significant changes to its flagship lineup. According to a leak from insider Digital Chat Station, the new Dimensity 9600 will be the first in the series to feature a dual high-performance core architecture. The chip is reportedly set to be manufactured using TSMC's 2nm N2P process, which should deliver a noticeable boost in both efficiency and performance.

The main innovation will be a new 2+3+3 processor layout. Two "main" cores will work alongside six performance cores. This marks a significant shift from the previous generation, which used a classic single main core design. For example, the Dimensity 9500 employed a configuration with one powerful ARM core, three performance cores, and four efficiency cores. The new dual-core system, codenamed "Canyon," is expected to enhance the chip's capabilities when handling complex tasks.

This architecture should allow the Dimensity 9600 to better manage resource-intensive workloads, particularly in AI-related tasks. Combined with the new manufacturing process, this could give it a clear advantage over earlier models in the series.

The graphics subsystem is also getting an upgrade. Rumors suggest the chip will feature a new GPU with neural shader support. This will improve interaction between the graphics and neural processing units, potentially boosting performance while reducing power consumption.

Meanwhile, Qualcomm is preparing its response with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, which is rumored to have a similar 2+3+3 architecture but will be based on its own Oryon cores. MediaTek, in contrast, is reportedly using new ARM Cortex-C2 series cores. This highlights the different approaches both companies are taking to achieve similar goals. Ultimately, the market is seeing competitors moving in the same direction while offering distinct technological solutions.
