Windows 11 update KB5086672 fixes March 2026 installation issues

Microsoft had to take swift action after a problematic March update for Windows 11. The optional cumulative update KB5079391, which contained quality improvements, was pulled almost immediately after its release due to widespread installation errors, specifically error code 0x80073712.

To replace it, Microsoft issued an emergency update, KB5086672. This patch is intended for devices running Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. It fixes the installation issues, bundles all March 2026 security patches, and includes accumulated system improvements. The new update supersedes previous versions and can be installed even on systems with newer packages like KB5079473. If needed, users can download it manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Despite the problems, KB5079391 did bring several notable features. These included an enhanced Narrator with image descriptions and Copilot integration, a refreshed Windows 11-style account interface, expanded File Explorer capabilities like voice control for files, support for displays with refresh rates above 1000 Hz, HDR and auto-rotation improvements, and better energy efficiency for monitors connected via USB4. Now, these features should work correctly with the new fix.

This isn't the first time Windows updates have drawn criticism. Earlier, the January patch KB5074109 caused serious issues, particularly for NVIDIA graphics card users, leading to FPS drops in games, visual artifacts, and system instability. In some cases, systems failed to boot entirely, displaying the UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME error. There were also reports of disruptions to cloud services like Outlook, OneDrive, and Dropbox.

Overall, the ongoing update issues continue to damage Microsoft's reputation. Despite promises to improve Windows 11 quality, users still regularly encounter critical bugs after installing new patches.
