Grand Theft Auto VI budget reaches record $5 billion for development

The development of Grand Theft Auto VI is already shaping up to be the most expensive project in entertainment history. According to public financial documents, Rockstar North alone spent nearly $3 billion on staff between 2019 and 2025. This figure covers salaries, social benefits, pension contributions, and bonuses, highlighting the sheer scale of the upcoming release.

It's worth noting that the Scottish team wasn't solely focused on GTA 6; they also continued supporting GTA Online and Red Dead Online. Even accounting for these projects, the spending remains unprecedented. While personnel costs typically dominate AAA game budgets, Rockstar has dozens of studios worldwide—from the U.S. to India—all contributing to the development.

Experts suggest that when factoring in all expenses, including marketing and the work of other divisions, GTA 6's total budget could reach $4–5 billion. For context, modern major games usually cost around $300 million. This puts Rockstar's new project well beyond the industry's typical scope.

Despite these massive investments, analysts are confident the game will recoup costs quickly due to immense audience interest. The primary revenue is expected to come from the online mode, which may incorporate MMORPG elements and evolve for years post-launch.
