Google Pixel smartphones automatically lower volume: what to do

Despite numerous complaints on forums like Reddit and through Google's official support channels, Google Pixel smartphones continue to automatically lower volume during music playback. This issue stems from the "Loud Sound Alert in Headphones" accessibility feature introduced in Android 14. The system monitors audio levels and, upon exceeding a safe threshold, first warns the user before automatically reducing volume to a safe level. In practice, this disrupts workouts, car rides, and even navigation, as voice instructions become quieter.

Users are actively discussing the problem online. One person noted it interferes with exercising, while another mentioned music suddenly losing volume in the car. Many assert they want to control sound themselves without system intervention. Google tested a new "Hearing" option in the "Sounds & Vibration" section of the Settings app, which was supposed to include two toggles—"Loud Sound Notifications" and "Hearing Health." Disabling both should have removed auto-reduction, but this feature remains unavailable in practice, even on the Pixel 10 with Android 16. Part of the delay may relate to EU legislation, including in Germany and France, where disabling hearing protection entirely is prohibited.

For those willing to take risks, a workaround exists: using Shizuku and SystemUI Tuner apps can disable automatic volume reduction. However, these tools require technical expertise, and improper use could damage the device. Google has not yet released an official fix, leaving Pixel users to either accept the limitation or try unofficial methods.
