Upgrade to Windows 11 25H2 as 24H2 support ends

Microsoft is preparing to end the lifecycle of Windows 11 version 24H2 and has announced a mandatory upgrade to the newer 25H2 build. Support for the current version will officially end in October this year, after which devices will no longer receive security updates, bug fixes, or new features.

The company clarifies that the automatic update will primarily affect regular users—those with home and professional versions of Windows 11 not managed by corporate IT services. These devices will receive the update to 25H2 automatically, though users will retain the ability to choose a restart time or temporarily postpone the installation.

In practice, this means the transition to the new version should be as seamless as possible. The update is delivered as an "enablement package," since both versions share a common code base. This results in faster installation and minimal risk of serious errors or compatibility issues.

For those who don't want to wait for the automatic update, a manual transition is already available. Users simply need to check for updates in the system settings—if the device meets the requirements, the new version will appear in the list of available installations.
