Apple has opened public beta testing for new versions of its operating systems, releasing the first builds of iOS 26.5, iPadOS 26.5, macOS Tahoe 26.5, along with updates for watchOS and tvOS. This follows just days after the developer versions, indicating the updates are ready for broader testing.
Apple Maps sees significant development in this release. The app now offers location recommendations based on popularity and user search history. Additionally, Apple is preparing to introduce an advertising model—commercial offers with appropriate labeling could appear in search results and suggestions as early as this summer.
Security across platforms has been strengthened. In iOS 26.5, end-to-end encryption for RCS messages between iPhone and Android devices is reactivated and enabled by default. This means conversations will be fully encrypted and inaccessible to third parties, making cross-platform communication more secure.
Specific changes affect European users. To comply with regulatory requirements, Apple is expanding support for third-party devices: headphones from other brands can now connect as easily as AirPods, while smartwatches gain access to notifications and Live Activities. Furthermore, accessory performance is improved—when connected via USB-C, iPhone automatically establishes a Bluetooth connection.
The update also brings enhancements for transferring data from iPhone to Android, and hints of new awards and features have been spotted in the Books app. Apple is focusing on ecosystem integration, security, and gradual service monetization, reflecting the company's near-term strategy.
