A recent analysis of the AirPods Max 2 design reveals that Apple's new headphones show almost no differences from the original model launched back in 2020. Despite the fanfare of their announcement and positioning as a refreshed device, the actual changes appear minimal.
According to iFixit, the only noticeable upgrade is the new H2 chip installed in each earcup. This chip handles audio processing and, combined with updated algorithms, delivers about 50% better active noise cancellation along with cleaner, more detailed sound. Beyond this, the internal construction remains practically unchanged.
Meanwhile, old issues persist. Specifically, condensation buildup inside the earcups—a flaw known since the first generation—seems unresolved. Additionally, Apple still does not offer users comprehensive repair guides or access to key spare parts.
Experts point out that the company could have improved repairability by simplifying access to the battery and USB-C port. This did not happen, however, leaving the AirPods Max 2 with a repairability score of 6 out of 10. As a result, the new release looks more like a minor refresh than a full-fledged next-generation device.
