Rockstar Games faces data breach by ShinyHunters hacker group

Rockstar Games has confirmed a cybersecurity incident involving a data breach through a third-party contractor. According to the company, malicious actors gained access only to a limited amount of internal information, which holds no significant value, and the incident did not affect players or service operations.

The hacker group ShinyHunters has claimed responsibility for the attack. This group has previously been linked to breaches at major companies, including Microsoft and Google. The hackers claim they accessed Rockstar's cloud infrastructure and demanded a ransom, threatening to publish the data if their demands were not met.

The group set a deadline of April 14, after which they say the stolen information may be released. However, the attackers have not disclosed what specific data they obtained, only hinting at potential "unpleasant consequences" for the company.

Rockstar stated that it is already investigating the incident and working with partners to address the fallout. The company emphasized that the breach did not impact user security or affect any game projects. This is not the first such incident for Rockstar: the studio previously faced a major leak when materials related to GTA VI were released online. This new event underscores the growing risks of cyber threats, even for the largest gaming companies.
