Apple is continuing development on its own smart glasses and is already testing multiple design variants. According to insider Mark Gurman, the company is considering at least four different frame types, betting on appearance and premium materials to stand out in the wearable device market.
This isn't about full augmented reality, but a simpler device. The glasses will feature built-in cameras, microphones, and sensors, capable of displaying smartphone notifications, capturing photos and video, playing music, and working with intelligent functions including a voice assistant and visual analysis. Functionally, the new product will be closer to a combination of smartwatches and wireless headphones. Most capabilities will depend on a connection to an iPhone, which will serve as the primary source of computing power and data.
Different frame shapes are in development, ranging from large rectangular to more compact oval models. Apple is also experimenting with colors and finishes, including black, blue, and light brown options. The body is planned to be made from acetate—a durable and more premium material compared to regular plastic.
The device announcement could happen by the end of this year or in 2027, with a full launch closer to spring or summer 2027. The smart glasses will be part of the company's broader strategy to develop devices with an emphasis on artificial intelligence.
