4A Games and Deep Silver have officially announced Metro 2039, the next installment in the popular post-apocalyptic shooter series. The developers describe it as the franchise's darkest chapter yet, emphasizing an atmosphere of despair and psychological tension.
The story continues from Metro Exodus, returning players to the underground tunnels of Moscow. At the center is a new protagonist known as the Wanderer, struggling to survive under a harsh totalitarian regime that has taken hold in the metro after the catastrophe.
Developers promise a return to the series' roots—cramped, dark locations and tense horror-infused gameplay. The game is being built on the studio's proprietary engine, which the creators say has been specifically tailored for the series, enabling a deeper atmosphere and more detailed world.
Metro 2039 will be a single-player narrative experience focused on storytelling. While an exact release date hasn't been revealed, the launch is scheduled for winter 2026. It will be available on PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store) as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles.
