Xbox Mode now available on Windows 11 devices for enhanced gaming

Microsoft continues to actively develop the Windows gaming ecosystem by expanding access to Xbox Mode—an interface previously associated mainly with portable gaming devices. The company is now taking this further by extending this console mode to a wider range of devices, including laptops, desktop PCs, and tablets running Windows 11. This move makes sense given the growing popularity of hybrid gaming devices.

The feature is part of the latest Windows Insider Canary build, numbered 29570.1000. With this update, users can launch Xbox Mode directly on their systems using the Xbox app, Game Bar settings, or the Win + F11 keyboard shortcut. The interface offers a full-screen mode focused on convenient controller navigation and a more console-like user experience.

In practice, Microsoft is building on an idea it began testing in 2025 when it introduced Full-Screen Experience for various form factors. That was an experimental solution, but now the company is clearly betting on unifying the Windows gaming interface to blur the line between PCs and consoles. This is particularly relevant for devices with energy-efficient processors and integrated graphics similar to those used in portable gaming consoles.

The expansion of Xbox Mode may also be linked to increasing competition from alternative platforms, including SteamOS and other Linux solutions aimed at gamers. Microsoft aims to offer a similarly convenient and cohesive gaming experience within its ecosystem, eliminating the need for users to seek third-party options. While exact release dates for the stable version of Windows remain undisclosed, the pace of testing suggests it won't be a long wait.
