Google is readying one of Android Auto’s most significant updates: home screen widgets. The feature has been in the pipeline for some time, initially in a rough stage, but a recent app version shows the project is now much closer to launch.
In Android Auto 16.8.161804, keen observers have spotted an overhauled widget configuration interface. Previously hidden under the codename “Earth” and looking like an experimental blueprint, the feature now goes by the clearer name “Car widgets.” The menu now closely resembles the familiar widget selection on Android phones, complete with a recommended section, a full list of available widgets, and previews.
A new search bar is another welcome addition, letting users find widgets faster. It’s a clear sign that Google is moving beyond mere testing and polishing the feature for a finished user experience. That said, the widgets themselves are still not active for everyone.
There’s no official word on launch timing, but with Google I/O approaching, an announcement seems very likely. Beyond widgets, updated weather card icons have also been spotted in Android Auto, though they too aren’t yet available in the stable version. All of this points to Google preparing a major visual and functional overhaul for its in-car platform.
