Xiaomi is rolling out the Android 17 Developer Preview to its first wave of devices. Right now, the early build is limited to just four models, and anyone installing it should proceed with caution—this is a developer release, not a stable update.

The roster currently includes the Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Ultra, Xiaomi 15T Pro, and the Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi. Owners can manually flash the test firmware, but they must first check their current HyperOS version. For the Xiaomi 17, that means OS3.0.301.0.WPCMIXM; for the 17 Ultra and Leitzphone, it’s OS3.0.9.0.WPAMIXM; and for the 15T Pro, OS3.0.11.0.WOSMIXM.

Crucially, this isn’t a standard over-the-air update available to everyone. The Android 17 Developer Preview is an early build aimed squarely at developers and enthusiasts. Such software often carries bugs, unfinished features, battery drain, and app compatibility issues. That’s why installing it on your daily driver isn’t advisable unless you have a specific reason.

According to the source, the Android 17 build for Xiaomi ships alongside HyperOS 3.3. This is surprising, because it suggests the company is neither moving to HyperOS 4 yet nor going through HyperOS 3.2. Still, it’s best to treat this as preliminary: Xiaomi hasn’t explained its shell numbering strategy, nor has it confirmed that all future Android 17 builds will be tied to HyperOS 3.3.

Before proceeding, users are advised to back up important data, ensure at least a 40% charge, and free up no less than 10 GB of storage space. If major issues arise post-update, rolling back to the stable firmware is possible, though the process could wipe your data.

For now, the program only covers four devices, but its launch is significant for Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO owners. With Android 17 entering early testing at Xiaomi, the next step is expected to be a wider model list and a clear schedule for stable HyperOS updates.
