AMD and OpenAI to build 6GW Instinct GPU cluster; Samsung to profit from HBM

AMD and OpenAI have struck a major deal to build a new 6-gigawatt infrastructure cluster using Instinct GPUs. Initial MI450 chip shipments are slated for the second half of 2026. OpenAI could also end up with as much as 10% of AMD’s shares through various market moves.

The upside isn’t limited to AMD. Samsung stands to gain as well: it supplies high-speed HBM3E memory for Instinct and is likely to be among the first HBM4 providers for future GPU batches. The more accelerators OpenAI orders from AMD, the more Samsung collects from memory sales.

In effect, the latest AI race draws a clear division of roles: AMD builds the chips, OpenAI puts them to work, and Samsung remains the pivotal memory supplier—positioned to earn billions from the artificial intelligence boom.
