Sony and TSMC announced plans to deepen their collaboration in image sensors. The companies signed a memorandum of understanding to create a new entity for developing and producing next-generation sensors.
Sony Semiconductor Solutions will play a key role, becoming the majority owner of the future business. Development and manufacturing are planned at Sony's new plant in Koshi, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan.
Both companies aim to combine their strengths: Sony will handle sensor technology and image processing, while TSMC will provide advanced manufacturing processes and production scale.
The partners' primary interest goes beyond mobile electronics. They are also focusing on solutions for artificial intelligence, automotive systems, and robotics, where demand for advanced sensors is growing rapidly.
Exact investment amounts have not been disclosed. Meanwhile, Sony is considering further expansion of its plant in Nagasaki. The projects will depend on market conditions and Japanese government support.
Reuters earlier reported that Japan's Ministry of Economy approved subsidies of up to 60 billion yen for Sony's sensor production in Kumamoto.
For TSMC, this is another step in strengthening its position in Japan. The company already produces at its Kumamoto plant, which began mass production in late 2024 and works with Sony Semiconductor Solutions and DENSO.
Against this backdrop, competition in the sensor market is intensifying. Samsung is gradually increasing sensor supply to Apple, making Sony's position in this segment less secure than before.
The partnership will be finalized only after a full legal agreement is signed between the parties.
