Recent leaks suggest the Apple Watch Series 12 won't include one of its most anticipated features: a built-in Touch ID fingerprint scanner. While earlier reports indicated the tech was being tested, Apple has now apparently put those plans on hold.

Previous leaks noted that Apple considered two possible locations for Touch ID: embedding it in the OLED display or integrating it into the side button. But according to leaker Instant Digital, the project was dropped because of cost concerns and tight internal space. Instead, Apple plans to use that space for a larger battery. It's unclear if this will translate into significantly longer battery life, or if the extra capacity is meant to support AI-driven features and more powerful hardware.

A fingerprint scanner would have added an extra layer of security for contactless payments and eliminated the need to enter a PIN when unlocking the watch. Still, since the Apple Watch can already be unlocked automatically when a paired iPhone is unlocked via Face ID, Touch ID was seen as a convenience rather than a must-have.

The same source says Apple is working on new sensors for future Watch models. Earlier rumors pointed to a blood glucose sensor and an enhanced blood pressure monitor. But neither technology is expected to debut with the Apple Watch Series 12, which is likely launching in September. For now, the full feature set of the next-generation Apple Watch remains under wraps.
