Google is preparing a major update to Android Auto that significantly changes the car interface. After many years, the system will finally adapt better to screens of different shapes and sizes, including round, curved, and irregular panels. Android Auto will use the entire display space without black borders, and controls will be placed in a tidy floating block to make the interface look more modern and cleaner.

Among the standout additions are interactive widgets on top of Google Maps. Drivers can pin shortcuts directly on the navigation screen without hiding their route. For example, they can open the garage, check the weather, view the calendar, or quickly contact a favorite contact while the map remains visible. Widget rows will vary by the car's display size.

Navigation is getting a major overhaul. Google has redesigned its 3D Maps view, calling it Immersive Navigation. Users will see more detailed buildings, overpasses, terrain, lanes, traffic lights, and stop signs. These visual cues are designed to help drivers navigate complex interchanges, turns, and congested areas with more confidence.

Entertainment options are expanding too. When parked, drivers can play HD video from their smartphone, and later this year, supported cars will be able to run YouTube in Full HD at 60 frames per second. Video playback will automatically stop once the car starts moving, but audio will keep playing, which is convenient for video podcasts. Additionally, Dolby Atmos support will be added, and Spotify and YouTube Music will receive visual updates to match the new interface style.

The biggest software update is deep integration of Gemini Intelligence. The AI can understand context, work with messages, calendar, email, and navigation, assisting with multi-step tasks. For example, if someone texts asking for a meeting address, the system can pull it from the calendar or emails and suggest a response. For cars with Google built-in, the assistant can even factor in vehicle specs, such as trunk dimensions, to tell you if a large box will fit.

This update marks a clear push by Google to transform the car screen into a comprehensive smart control hub. Navigation, communication, entertainment, and AI assistance are now more tightly integrated, making the platform a stronger rival to Apple CarPlay.
