Fosi Audio has introduced an unusual accessory for wired audio fans: the MD3 MagDac. It is a portable magnetic DAC and headphone amplifier that attaches to the back of an iPhone via MagSafe and connects via USB-C. The device can also work with other USB-C gadgets, such as iPads and MacBooks.
The MagDac's main job is to bring full-featured wired audio back to modern iPhones, and in two versions at that. The accessory features a 3.5mm unbalanced output and a 4.4mm balanced connector for more demanding headphones. There is also a USB-C port for charging the device while in use.
A standout feature is the built-in 1.28-inch LCD display. It can show images, but its primary function is a 100-step volume adjuster. This makes the MagDac look less like a utilitarian adapter and more like a dedicated audiophile module for a smartphone.
Fosi Audio will release the MD3 MagDac in two colors: Galaxy in silver and Obsidian in black. Sales are set to begin on May 25, with an expected price of around $150. For those who don't need the MagSafe mount and display, the company already offers more affordable USB-C DAC solutions.
